The City of Glendale has announced that Erewhon, the upscale organic market and café with ten locations across Southern California, will open its eleventh location at the former Virgil’s Hardware Home Center site located at 520 N. Glendale Avenue. The new Erewhon store is expected to open in approximately 18 months, expanding its reach to provide healthy, organic foods to more communities in Los Angeles County.
Erewhon, founded in 1968, has become a premier brand for healthy groceries, meals, and tonics, offering products that promote health and wellness. The market features organic, biodynamic, regenerative, and gluten-free options. Erewhon also offers a membership program with exclusive lifestyle offers and events. As of 2021, Erewhon is a Certified B Corp, highlighting its commitment to using business as a force for good.
The Erewhon development team collaborated closely with Glendale’s Economic Development Division during the site selection process. They were attracted to the vacant building due to its historical significance and strategic location in the San Fernando Valley.
“Expanding to Glendale is a significant step in Erewhon’s mission to enhance nutrition and positively impact the food system in Southern California,” said Tony Antoci, CEO of Erewhon. “We look forward to revitalizing an iconic community landmark and contributing to Glendale’s unique character.”
The 24,000-square-foot building will see Erewhon utilizing 18,000 square feet, with plans to lease the remaining space to complementary tenants. The development team intends to remodel the building’s facade, upgrade utilities, and enhance the surrounding area with landscaping and outdoor seating. Architectural elements will pay homage to Glendale’s history and neighborhood spirit.
“We are excited to welcome Erewhon to Glendale,” said Bradley Calvert, Glendale’s Director of Community Development. “Erewhon’s focus on health and wellness, combined with their understanding of the unique attributes of cities and residents, makes them an excellent addition to our community. Their decision to expand in Glendale underscores the city’s strength for retail growth.”
Virgil’s Hardware has a storied history in Glendale, having operated in the city since 1932. Known for its quirky assortment of items ranging from eggs to vintage doorknobs, it stood out from larger chain hardware stores until its closure in 2019. The site has remained vacant since then.
“Erewhon is honored to occupy this historic site, which holds many memories for local residents,” said Josephine Antoci, President of Erewhon. “Each of our markets reflects the history and community of its neighborhood, and we look forward to seeing that identity take shape in Glendale.”
