Two Hoover wrestlers seized championship titles at the Rio Hondo League finals held at Monrovia High on Feb. 2, etching their names in the annals of history. Charles Martinito and Grickore Danelyan emerged victorious, while three others secured spots in the CIF Southern Section Individual Championships with runner-up finishes in the league finals the previous week.
Martinito, competing in the 126-pound category, secured his path to the title match by defeating Giovanni Trevino of Monrovia before clinching the championship against Santiago Perez of San Marino with a decisive 16-3 victory.
Danelyan, in the 175-pound division, also navigated his way to the championship, triumphing over Maxwell Rosen of La Cañada in the final.
Vahagn Sakanyan, in the 132-pound weight class, finished as the runner-up after a hard-fought journey, culminating in a narrow defeat to Sevak Araklyen of Burbank.
In the girls’ division, Serineh Crane and Angel Bogharyan secured second place in their respective divisions. Crane fell to Jianna Lee of La Cañada in the 115-pound championship, while Bogharyan lost to Allison Ingrassia of La Cañada in the 125-pound final.
Following these league finals, the CIF Southern Section Individual Wrestling Championships unfolded over two days beginning on Friday, Feb. 9, across six different school sites. Wrestlers engaged in semifinal and championship matches on Saturday, Feb. 10.
The top finishers from this tournament will advance to the CIF Southern Section Wrestling Masters Meet, scheduled to take place at Palm Springs High School on Friday, Feb. 16.
