Glendale Activates Cooling Centers Amid Upcoming Heat Wave

In anticipation of the upcoming heat wave, the City of Glendale Community Services & Parks Department is activating four community centers as cooling centers from Saturday, June 22, 2024, through Sunday, June 23, 2024.

The City of Glendale encourages residents without a cool place during the hottest parts of the day to visit one of the four community centers across the city to cool off. Additionally, residents can keep cool through various water play options. The splash pad at Cerritos Park is open from 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM daily. Wading pools are available on alternating days at Dunsmore Park, Brand Park, Glenoaks Park, and Palmer Park. The Pacific Community Pool is open daily for recreational swimming. If you plan to be outdoors, please take the following precautions to protect yourself from the sun and heat:

  • Avoid the sun from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM when the rays are strongest.
  • Reduce physical activity.
  • Wear a wide-brimmed hat and light-colored, lightweight, loose-fitting clothes.
  • Avoid hot, heavy meals that include proteins.
  • Set your air conditioner between 75° to 80°. If you don’t have air conditioning, take a cool shower twice a day.
  • Drink plenty of fluids, even if you are not thirsty. Avoid alcohol and caffeine.
  • Use sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15 if you need to be in the sun.
  • Stay in shade whenever possible.
  • Ensure pets have plenty of water and shade.

Symptoms of dehydration and heat cramps include dizziness, fatigue, faintness, headaches, rapid heartbeat, muscle cramps, and increased thirst. Anyone experiencing these symptoms should seek immediate medical attention or call 911.
