Glendale Sports Complex Solar Energy Initiative Set to Begin

Glendale Water and Power (GWP) is organizing an informational community meeting to discuss the upcoming Solar Development Program at the Glendale Sports Complex. The project involves installing carport solar canopies over sections of the Sports Complex parking lot. Construction is set to begin in November 2024, with completion anticipated by February 2025. The initiative is part of the City of Glendale’s commitment to clean energy, as the solar installation will contribute to GWP’s renewable energy portfolio. The community meeting will take place in person on Thursday, October 3, 2024, at the Sparr Heights Community Center.

The solar array planned for the Glendale Sports Complex will have an estimated photovoltaic capacity of 1,343 kW, generating over 2 million kWh of clean energy annually. This amount of energy is equivalent to taking 363 gasoline-powered cars off the road each year. The project is part of a broader effort by the city, which includes several solar projects scheduled to be completed over the next three years. Phase 1 of the Solar Development Program was approved by the Glendale City Council in November 2023.
