As the summer season comes to a close and Labor Day festivities draw near, the Glendale Police Department is issuing a reminder to all drivers to prioritize safety on the roads. The department emphasizes the importance of making responsible choices, particularly when it comes to avoiding driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs.
Sgt. Ryan Gunn of the Glendale Police Department stressed the significance of this message, stating, “We want everyone to enjoy their end-of-summer travels and Labor Day celebrations, but it’s crucial to do so responsibly. Driving under the influence not only puts your life at risk but also endangers everyone else on the road. Our primary goal is to reduce preventable crashes and save lives.”
To promote safe driving, the Glendale Police Department has provided several key tips:
- Plan Ahead: If you plan to drink, arrange for a designated driver, or use ride-sharing services, taxis, or public transportation.
- Buckle Up: Always wear a seatbelt, one of the simplest yet most effective ways to protect yourself in a crash.
- Stay Alert: Avoid distractions like texting or eating while driving. Focus entirely on the road.
- Follow Speed Limits: Adhering to speed limits allows for better reaction times and reduces the severity of crashes.
- Watch for Pedestrians and Bicyclists: With more people engaging in outdoor activities, it’s essential to share the road responsibly.
- Take Breaks: For long-distance travel, take regular breaks to rest and prevent fatigue.
From August 14 through Labor Day (September 2), the Glendale Police Department will increase patrols, specifically looking for drivers suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs. This initiative is part of the national enforcement campaign, “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over.”
In addition to the increased patrols, the Glendale Police Department will conduct a DUI checkpoint on Friday, August 16, at an undisclosed location within Glendale. This effort aligns with the broader goal of preventing impaired driving and ensuring community safety.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 13,524 people lost their lives in drunk-driving crashes in 2022, equating to one death every 39 minutes. While drunk driving remains a significant issue, it’s crucial to remember that impairment can also result from prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, and cannabis products. If you plan on consuming substances that could impair your ability to drive, ensure that a sober individual takes the wheel. If you observe someone who appears to be driving while impaired, call 9-1-1 immediately.
Funding for this program is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
