Varsity Volleyball Recap: Glendale and Hoover High School Matches

The Glendale High School varsity boys’ volleyball team faced a defeat against visiting Burroughs High of Burbank, with scores of 17-25, 21-25, and 19-25, during a Pacific League match on March 27. Tad Whiting led the team with nine blocks and eight kills, followed by Ibrahim Alnaqib contributing seven kills, four digs, and one block. Koko Haboian provided 12 assists and eight digs, while Caleb Shimasaki managed eight assists and three digs. Quan Tran contributed nine digs, with Nick Ramirez and Thomas Gonzales adding to the team’s efforts with their respective kills and blocks.

Earlier, the Nitros secured a win against host Hoover High, sweeping the match with scores of 25-8, 25-17, and 25-10, in a nonleague encounter on March 25. Shimasaki led with 15 assists, three aces, and one block, followed by Haboian with 12 assists and three aces. Whiting showcased a strong performance with 10 kills, eight aces, and one block. The team saw contributions from various players including Benjamin Salmeron, Ramirez, Alnaqib, and Raul Martinez.

Glendale, currently standing at 8-4 overall and 1-2 in league, is set to host Muir High of Pasadena for a nonleague match on April 1, followed by a match against Hoover on April 2.

Meanwhile, Hoover High School’s volleyball team faced defeats in their recent matches. Against visiting Compton Early College on March 27, the Tornados were swept with scores of 19-25, 23-25, and 22-25, in a nonleague contest. Ryan Cantos stood out with 10 assists during the match.

In another match against Glendale on March 25, Hoover faced a defeat with scores of 8-25, 17-25, and 10-25, in a nonleague encounter. The team saw contributions from players like Armen Tormasyan, Nathan Baneham, and Kyle Bacalso.

With an overall record of 0-4, Hoover High will visit Glendale for a nonleague match on April 2 before traveling to Muir High in Pasadena on April 9.

In other volleyball news, Crescenta Valley Falcons secured a victory over visiting Arcadia with scores of 18-25, 25-17, 29-27, and 25-22, during a Pacific League match on March 27. Various players like Joshua Sohn, Logan Freemon, and Colin Walley played significant roles in the victory.

The team faced a defeat against St. Francis High in La Cañada on March 22, with scores of 16-25, 21-25, and 23-25, in a nonleague match. Players like Sohn, Freemon, and Walley showcased commendable performances.

Crescenta Valley, currently with a record of 17-6 and 3-1 in league, will host Taft High of Woodland Hills for a nonleague match on April 4 before visiting Glendale on April 5.
