The City of Glendale has recently completed the North Brand Boulevard Complete Streets Demonstration Project, transforming a half-mile stretch of Brand Boulevard into a multi-modal corridor featuring barrier-protected bike lanes and colorfully painted intersection bump-outs.
This quick-build project, extending from Glenoaks Boulevard north to Mountain Street, now provides two protected bike lanes for walkers and cyclists while maintaining ample diagonal parking and three lanes for cars—reduced from the previous five lanes since work began on April 9.
When reviewed by SAFE, the upgraded section of North Brand Boulevard stood out for its enhanced safety, brightness, and welcoming atmosphere. The area features brightly painted mosaics to calm traffic near intersections and Technicolor-green pavement in conflict zones and bike boxes.
Cyclists and pedestrians benefit from the protection of concrete jersey barriers, creating a pleasant, neighborhood-like environment. Residents can now leisurely stroll and cycle past al fresco dining options and enjoy the sun, offering a much-needed respite from the usual Los Angeles traffic.
For those interested in learning more about the North Brand project, information is available on the Glendale Share Space and Place site. Residents are encouraged to visit and experience the improvements themselves. The project is temporary, set to remain through the fall, with the possibility of becoming permanent based on community feedback.
